Classes Offered Throughout The Fall

Coffee Solutions' Hopedale, MA laboratory and training center is certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America to provide officially sanctioned training on behalf of the SCAA.

This certification enables Coffee Solutions to offer SCAA training classes and examinations for industry certification. Students who successfully complete courses at the Coffee Solutions' facility will be provided with official SCAA and/or CQI certifications.

The SCAA Certified Cupping Judge program is a 5 day intensive certification program that brings students through an increasingly difficult series of sensory and organoleptic exercises to test their threshold for discerning minute differences between coffees. Substantial time is set aside for lectures and practice exercises to allow students to become confident with the subject matter before taking graded tests.

Students who successfully complete this program will receive a Certified Cupping Judge certificate directly from the SCAA. Certified SCAA cupping judges can judge coffees at SCAA events and can use the credential throughout the coffee industry to demonstrate their status as a coffee taster of distinction. Those who pass this course will also be given the opportunity to take the CQI written test to gain their Q-Grader credential as well. Q-Grader certificates will come directly from CQI. This course will be taught by Mr. Rob Stephen, a certified Q grader, SCAA cupping judge and a past president of SCAA Board of Directors.

A $450 non-refundable deposit is required to hold a spot in the class. Total cost is $1000, which includes lunch. Early bird discounts and payment plans are available. Discount rate hotels are located close to the class, which is a short distance from both Boston and Providence airports.

Want to take the Q Grader exam, but not sure if you are ready? Our two day preparatory class is designed for you!

Over two days, we will cover the following items in our SCAA Certified training facility:

  • How to use the SCAA cupping form
  • Hands on practice with cupping
  • How to grade coffee
  • Intro to the sensory skills test
  • Intro to the olfactory test
  • Triangle testing practice       

All hands on portions of the class are done in the same facility, with the same equipment and under the same conditions as the actual test.
